USGS Mapping Notes

This is a project of mine to develop interfaces to enhance the usage of the USGS maps and images made available online via the Terraserver project. As explained in the FAQ for that site, the images there are all public domain, and thus can be freely copied and used for a variety of purposes. However, while they offer download and web service as options, the parameters of the map browsing and download are non-optimal for many purposes.

Right now I made a preliminary CGI script which demonstrates putting the tiles together. I would like to make a general framework for using the application, including a Java implementation of the SPCS83 program to convert latitude and longitude (aka geodetic coordinates) to the state plane coordinates (aka x and y).
