In definite contradiction with the traditional curriculum of Cackle's Academy, Ruby Cherrytree has a particular liking for gadgets. On the first day of term, Miss Hardbroom, who abhors technology of any kind, catches her with a Walkman. Ruby however, is not to be deterred.
She has all kinds of neat stuff like a multi-function electronic watch-timer, which she uses to time the seconds while Miss Hardbroom has her back turned, and a cyberpup named Bonzo. Ruby, although she wants to be a witch, is somewhat uncomfortable with the lack of technology at Cackle's and feels more at ease surrounded by her toys. She likes to have fun with her friends and blasts music from her portable radio, while dancing on tables in the library.
