COPYRIGHT AND GAME SYSTEMS

This is a general set of articles on the question of copyright and trademark infringement with respect to role-playing, board, and other non-computer game systems. I am not a lawyer, but I felt some need to have this since other sites covering this topic are from sources with an agenda: i.e. game companies who want to prevent unofficial competition, or companies that want to market such unofficial products.

  1. COPYRIGHT BASICS
with game-specific info and links to more general sites

  2. NEW GAMES
new game designs which resemble or draw from other games

  3. SUPPLEMENTS
commercial and free supplements for use with an existing game

  4. OPEN GAMING
the meaning "open source" for boardgames and RPGs

Please note that I do not claim to be a legal expert in intellectual property law. Wherever possible in these pages I attempt to link out to actual legal authorities. If you know that any information I have here is incorrect, please send me email and I will correct or remove it.
