INTRODUCTION ============ The following are the basic rules for role-playing in the world of Oneiros. While it is often said that one can use any system to play in a given world, I feel that there are a many features to Oneiros which make it difficult to use other systems. You may wish to use another system, but I urge you to carefully examine these rules before making the conversion - as there are many subtleties which may be missed. My game mechanics do borrow noticeably from Ars Magica, but the massive changes force me to write it up as a separate game. All due credit and respect to the designers of AM, however. To experienced players of Ars Magica: there is very little that remains unchanged, so beware of bringing in preconceptions about how things should work. Even the basics of die rolling have changed: I use only Simple rolls at most times, with Stress rolls being substituted only at the GM's discretion. BASIC CONCEPTS The Game Round is a block of time used in resolving tense or fast-paced action. Each round, the GM will ask the players to declare their actions in turn. After resolving the events of that round, the process will repeat. A round can be any length of time, although it will generally range from a few seconds to a minute. In combat, though, a round is almost always between 4 and 6 seconds. Die Rolling is generally done using a ten-sided die ('d10'), with zero counting as a ten. This is known as a simple roll. At times, the GM will call for a 'stress roll'. In this case, ... SCALE The _Scale_ rating of an object or creature is a general measure of its size and mass. Average Scale is 0 - which corresponds to the size of an adult human. SUBSTANCE The _Substance_ rating of an individual object or creature, on the other hand, is its size in the mind of Existance. Simple objects have little substance, while detailed, complex objects are greater in Substance. A rough guide: Substance: 1 Simple Object: a knife, a blank parchment, etc. 2 3 Complex Object: a book, a detailed carriage, a painting, etc. 4 5 Average Animal 6 7 Stereotypic person or simpleton; Unique, complex animal 8 Average person 9 A distinctive character 10 A rare personage 11 A unique individual; one-of-a-kind The rating for most PC's will be 9, which can be modified later based on events. I do not think it is that unbalancing to give anyone a higher substance rating.
