Lapawinso - Chief of the Lenape and male head of Turtle clan

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: a

You are chief of all the Lenape, and male head of the Turtle clan. You travelled with your family in your youth, and went to the great city of Pe Dee in the South. There your family learned of corn raising and the Great Spirit, worshipped from great towering temples. For years after your return your family were famous among tribes far and wide, for corn meal was rich and the spirit ways compelling. Then the sickness broke out. Many died, including your mother, your sister, and eldest niece - leaving your 20-year-old younger niece as the female head of your clan. Worse, the crops failed with harsh winters and no one to tend them.

You wish to be known in time not by these hardships, but by great accomplishments. You would like to have vast fields, and begin building a great mound temple like that of Pe Dee, despite having a practical man with no particular respect for the Great Spirit or any lesser ones. They have done nothing for you, and you pay them lip service at best.

Your primary Goal is to establish an alliance with the white-haired people and take credit for it. Your secondary Goal is to commit as little as possible in making this alliance, but enough to secure your own and their people's support.

Questions:

  1. What do you most hope to gain from the white-hairs?
  2. Do you think Mahattan is a threat to your position?

Your resources include Command (as chief, you can give orders to other Lenape as long as you have political justification) and Cautious (you may bid Willpower tabs in a contest, but then not pay them if you don't want to win - the opponent must still spend any Willpower tabs they declared).

Opala - Chief's niece and female head of Turtle clan

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: b

Eight years ago, your grandmother died of plague. Two years ago, your mother and older sister died of another plague. That makes you the eldest woman of your family and leader of your clan, though you are barely twenty. When you marry and have a son, he will be chief after your uncle Lapawinso passes on, and you are expected to manage the family lands. It is a heavy burden, but you are full of new ideas for how to run things. Your uncle has done much to promote cultivation of corn, brought from the great cities to the south. With these crops and possibly the beasts of the white-hairs, you can see a life without hunting - where women like you are the providers and leaders.

Your primary Goal is to establish familial relations between your people and the white-hairs, by adoption or marriage. Your secondary Goal is to learn as much about them as possible.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of your uncle Lapawinso?
  2. What do you most hope to gain from the white-hairs?

Your resources include Persuasion (advise others that they find your deals more attractive than they otherwise would); and Stubbornness (you may flaunt tradition and status - you may choose to not back down from a lost status check and not lose Willpower).

Tamaqua - Lenape Shaman of the Turtle Clan

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: c

You are a shaman, in touch with the spirits of land and animals. In the old Lenape tradition, you conduct others on journeys to the spirit world -- done usually after a long fast, time in a sweat lodge, drumming, and breathing smoke of tobacco leaves burnt in a bowl. In the Spirit World, each person will face difficult tests personal to them, and are given a reward if they do well - but always with a cost. You were not born to this position, but found it your calling as you grew up. In the past decades, many have been troubled - particularly due to the series of plagues that killed over half the population.

The Lenape are changing from the ways taken from the great mound temples to the south. Your spirits acknowledge the Great Spirit they worship, but you do not trust the ways of the big cities, and would like see other views. You feel this meeting with the white-haired people will shape the future of this land, not by alliances or wars made, but by what you learn from each other.

Your primary Goal is to bring as many white-hairs onto a spirit journey as you can, to test them and learn about them. Your secondary Goal is to convince a white-haired adult to come live with your tribe for a while.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of war with the Tappan?
  2. What is your totem animal spirit like?

You resources include Spirit Journey (you may take willing participants to the spirit world via ceremony - check with GM) and Communication (you can talk to vikings in simple single words and understand roughly what they say).

Mahattan - Lenape War leader, of Wolf Clan

Physical Rank: b; Social Rank: b

You are a great war leader among the Lenape. In the past five years, you have lead eight raids, all very successful - and have never been defeated in battle. Unprovoked attacks by the Tappan have increased, and you want to prove yourself and your tribe by a total defeat of them, conquering Hilled Island and putting it in your name. You are not political per se, but you can tell that chief Lapowinsa considers you a threat.

The Tappan had grown increasingly hostile, in part because they blamed your new ways for the plagues that have swept through. You yourself had two brothers and one sister who had died of the plague, leaving you an only child. However, the Tappan's superstition and prejudice are their weakness, and your victories have shown that they are in the wrong.

Your primary Goal is to get as many as possible to declare allegiance in conquering the Tappan from the hilled island. Your secondary Goal is to get recognition of your greatness from the white-hairs.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of your uncle and mother?
  2. What do you think of Lapowinsa?

Your resources are Warfare (everyone who fights with you has effectively one higher Physical Rank) and Charisma (you are the leader of many warriors in your tribe).

Tapgow - male head of the Wolf Clan, the Sly Fox

Physical Rank: c; Social Rank: b

You are the male head of the Wolf clan within the Lenape, and uncle of the great war leader Mahattan, known for your cunning. Member of the clan call you the Sly Fox. You sometimes come across as odd or even crazy, but always with some purpose in mind. Your grandfather was a Tappan who married and joined into the Lenape Wolf clan years ago - before the current trouble between your tribes. You identify with them, and see that the fighting was often started by provocations on both sides, and results from miscommunication.

Many Tappan see growing corn as a threat to their ways. Not only do they associate it with increased militancy of the Lenape in guarding their lands, but some feel that it has angered the spirits, causing the plagues that have devasted both your peoples. Your nephew Mahattan had a brother and sister who both died of plague, leaving him an only child. You are the head of the family for him, closer than his biological father. He wants only to fight the Tappan, but you think that this war would be bad for both sides.

Your primary Goal is to get agreement to try to negotiate with the Tappan first, rather than attacking the island outright.

Questions:

  1. What do you think drives Mahattan?
  2. How well do you get along with your sister Avowas?

Your resources are Crazy Like A Fox (no one can tell your true goals or powers - you do not have to answer any out-of-character questions) and Surprise (act at one higher rank in a contest if it is from surprise).

Avowas - female head of Wolf clan, the She-Wolf

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: b

You are the female head of the Wolf clan of the Lenape, and mother of the great war leader Mahattan. You are known as the she-wolf compared to your brother Tapgow the fox. Like a she-wolf, you are a strong and patient huntress. Those who oppose you will regret it, not always immediately but with absolute certainty over time. Of your four children, three died in the plagues (two sons and one daughter), leaving only your son Mahattan. More than anything else, you are interested in his best interest - especially in helping him achieve greatness. War with the Tappan is inevitable, and it is best for everyone to have a swift, decisive victory that will bring hostility to an end.

Your Goal is for your people to agree on war with the Tappan, to be lead by your son Mahattan.

Questions:

  1. What does Mahattan think of you? Do you care?
  2. How well do you get along with your brother Tapgas?

Your resources are Know Your Enemy (after a few minutes conversation, you may pay one Willpower, and ask out of character exactly what that person's Resources are) and Lie (your lies cannot be detected).

Agnar - rescued viking boy

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: c

Ten years ago, you were only five when your family was wiped out in an attack by the Tappan. The Tappan captured you and raised you. It was a difficult adjustment, but you learned to be tough and find your way around the woods. On the viking homestead, it was dark and smelly all the time, and you were mostly neglected as a lower-class child. Among the Tappan, you were often treated with disdain and sometimes beaten by other children, but you learned their ways and earned a bit of grudging respect. You felt badly since so many of them died of sickness when you were growing up.

A year ago, you were captured by the Lenape in a raid, and adopted into chief Lapawinso's family. You became a curiousity that everyone looked up to, and are now being trusted as an envoy to the people you were born to.

Your primary Goal is to stay with the Lenape, and not be returned to live on a viking homestead.

Questions:

  1. What is your worst memory of your original home?
  2. Would you want war with the Tappan?

Your resources are Language (you speak both Icelandic and Lenape fluently) and Overhear (for a conversation in sight, you can go afterwards and ask out of character, and they must tell you exactly what they were talking about).

Ragnhild - rescued viking girl

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: c

Ten years ago, you were eight when savages slaughtered your family and took you captive. You were the daughter of the family head, and had servants to tend to you. Among the Tappan who captured you, there was a token show of adopting you into the tribe - but it rapidly went downhill when plague struck the tribe soon after your capture, killing over half of them. Although they didn't say it, you could tell that the Tappan blamed you - and the only reason they didn't kill you was that the fear that it would somehow make things worse.

A year ago, you were captured in a raid by the Lenape. You were adopted by chief Lapawinso, yet you were still made to work like a servant.

Your primary Goal is to be adopted back into a viking family. Your secondary Goal for there to be war with the Tappan who killed your real family.

Questions:

  1. You had an uncle Grim. What did you think of him?
  2. What do you think of the Lenape, as opposed to the Tappan?

Your resources are Language (you speak both Icelandic and Lenape fluently) and Escape (slip away from any conflict without being hurt, even by powers).

Yngvild the Deep-Minded - viking clan matriarch

Physical Rank: f; Social Rank: a

You are a great-grandmother, ancestor of many on homestead, and the eldest noble of your household. As a woman, you do not traditionally have say in matters of war or law - but by age and force of personality you have say over everything. You grew up in Greenland, and influenced your husband Hrothgar to settle here in Vinland. Hrothgar died in battle many years ago, and you have kept watch over the family since then. You are concerned in particular that because you cut off from the rest of Scandanavia, that your distant descendents may be absorbed into the local culture here, and your family tradition lost.

Your primary Goal is to fuel your clan's ambitions. You should never back down from a challenge, and must prove to these Lenape that you are better than they are. Your secondary goal is to make sure that any intermarriage or adoption keeps any vikings in your household, rather than joining the Lenape.

Questions:

  1. What might draw your people into the Lenape?
  2. How close a leash do you plan to keep on your grandson Thorstein?

Your resources are Savvy (after a few minutes conversation, you can pay one willpower tab, and the person must tell you their true Goals) and Stubborn (you cannot be intimidated, persuaded, or otherwise influenced by Resources).

Thorstein the Proud - viking clan leader

Physical Rank: c; Social Rank: b

You are the young warrior leader of your clan, born and raised here in Vinland, at the family home of Raudarbank. You are a classic viking leader - and people compare you to your namesake Thor, the god of thunder. You are loud and brash, welcoming to your friends and fearsome to your enemies. Your father died at sea a year ago, making you leader sooner than you expected.

Your home here is a good one. Life is difficult but not impossible. Relations with the skraelings have been mixed, with frequent encounters, occasional skirmishes, and a few wordless barter meetings. Like everyone, they respect strength, and have not made any serious attacks. However, ten years ago, a homestead across the bay was sacked, with the only survivors being those who were out to sea. That was the exception, but you do not know why it happened.

Your primary Goal is to assure long-term good relations with the skraelings - which is not the same as immediately agreeing to whatever this tribe wants.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of your grandmother Yngvar?
  2. How concerned are you about skraeling attack?

Your resources are: Command (as male leader of your clan, you can give orders to other vikings if you have a family business justification) and Friendly Wager (if someone bid Willpower against you, you can choose to concede and allow them to keep the Willpower they bid).

Halldis the Fierce - Thorstein's step-mother

Physical Rank: d; Social Rank: c

You are a free woman from another homestead up the coast, who was married to an older man - Thorstein's father Harald. You are proud, noble, combative, and fierce. A year ago - less than a year into your marriage - Harald was lost at sea, making you step-mother. This is not your family, and at times you feel unwelcome - but you feel that you must do your best by them.

Your primary Goal is to test these skraelings as sorely as possible without provoking war with them, to see if they are trustworthy and competent.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of your stepson Thorstein?
  2. What do you hope to gain from the skraelings?

Your Resources are Don't Mess With Me (from any lost contest, the person who defeats you loses one Willpower) and Urge On (you may spend Willpower to affect the outcome of any contest you are present at).

Sigrid the Blessed - viking prophetess

Physical Rank: e; Social Rank: c

You are a young prophetess of the seidr tradition. You stand apart from the others of your homestead by your visions of other worlds - the disir, the alfar, the valkyries, and others. You were born a free woman in another homestead, and learned the craft of seidr under a prophetess there. You came to here and were hired by Thorstein's father as good luck and information for his side.

The homestead have made you as welcome as you would expect. Their top concerns have been crops, which have been poor, and danger from the skraelings - particularly since a homestead across the bay was sacked ten years ago. Your spirits have been vague about the latter, but perhaps that will change once you have met them.

Your primary Goal is to bring as many skraelings onto a spirit journey with you, to be tested by your spirits. Your secondary Goal is to prove yourself useful to Thorstein.

Questions:

  1. What is your patron spirit like?
  2. What do you think of the skraelings?

Your Resources are Spirit Journey (you may take yourself and others on a journey into the spirit world in a long ceremony) and Second Sight (you may pay one Willpower, and ask out of character exactly what that person's Resources are).

Ivar Forge-hammer - skilled viking huscarl

Physical Rank: c; Social Rank: d

You are the most skilled worker of iron at the homestead. The classic blacksmith, strong, hot-tempered, but fair in your judgments. You have grown up a huscarl - technically pledged to fight as a soldier for Thorstein as payment for your room and board at the homestead. Your skill at the forge is more important, though, given that few homesteads here are making their own iron.

Your primary Goal is to open up new markets and sources for iron - get agreement that the skraelings can buy your iron, especially if they open more territory to mine it.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of Thorstein?
  2. What are your ambitions for success? Your own homestead?

Your resources are Iron-making (you control this commodity valuable to both vikings and the Lenape) and Truth Sense (you can ask out-of-chracter if the previous statements was a lie).

Grim the Vengeful - violent viking huscarl

Physical Rank: c; Social Rank: d

You were the noble son of another homestead across the bay, known to be terrible in battle like a raging bear. Ten years ago, you went out on a fishing expedition in the spring, and returned to find your homestead destroyed and everything taken by a horde of the local savages. You lost everything, and went to this homestead across the bay. Here you have no rank, and only stay as a huscarl to Thorstein - swearing to fight for him in return for your room and board.

Your primary Goal is avenge your family's death - which will probably not be directly possible at this meeting as you would not openly defy your lord or bring danger on the homestead. However, it can be pursued by learning about the attack, and getting others to agree on an attack on those responsible. Your secondary Goal is to undermine any trust in the skraelings.

Questions:

  1. What test would you make to prove a skraeling untrustworthy?
  2. What do you think of your leader Thorstein?

Your resources are Suspicious (you can ask out-of-character if the last statement was a lie) and Berserk (you may have two higher physical rank for a fight, but only by losing control).

Niall the Towering - (well-built thrall)

Physical Rank: a; Social Rank: f

You are a young thrall, only eighteen years of age, but still the largest man at the clan's homestead - nearly seven feet tall. Your mother was a thrall, the great grand-daughter of a Irish woman captured in a raid from Iceland. Everyone on the homestead works, but you are generally stuck with the dirtiest and riskiest jobs. You have taken this calmly, but now that you have grown up, you would like to bargain your physical power for a way to gain your freedom.

One of the risky tasks you've done over the last year is trade with local tribes. You would bring out cloth and other items to a trading spot, and were supposed to stand back and look imposing, but that was boring. Instead, you typically sat and interacted with them.

Your Goal is to gain your freedom - by promise of a viking leader, or by enough wealth to pay for your freedom.

Questions:

  1. What do you think of the skraelings?
  2. Who do you like most in your homestead?

Your resources are Language (can roughly understand the Lenape, and speak haltingly in simple words); and Intimidation (if you are more than two physical ranks above someone, you can win a social conflict by threatening violence).
