Varg (of Burzum fame) talks a lot about RPGs on his Youtube channel, and his own game (with rules walkthroughs!) in particular.

It's surreal...

This video is basically all about why he thinks Basic Fantasy is the best version of D&D. Varg is OSR.

+Chris Gonnerman, you aware of this endorsement? :D

why would you ever start this meme off you psycho?

A- Because it is truly remarkable that when he's talking about RPGs, he really doesn't sound any different than anyone else around here.

B- A few years back when I had some excess cash I had the idea to buy a video camera and when bands passed through Helsinki have them do plugs for LotFP so my Youtube channel would be filled with such endorsements. And then here this is, completely unsolicited (I'm guessing), for someone else's game. :P

C- Imagine the fun, now that he's a game designer and publisher, if he ever wanders over to rpg.net or the RPGSite.

You and I have very different definitions of fun.

I had to google who he was. Not sure I'd put his endorsement on the back of a book. (Well, unless it was about almost-Nazism or something.)

Stop what? Using papyrus? :D :D :D

He's been playing RPGs for a long time. Back in the nineties when he murdered Øystein Aarseth and burned all those churches, the Norwegian RPG scene were holding their breath, but luckily the media didn't go with the "rolling dice makes people kill each other" angle. Playground Magazine tried to get an interview with him a few years ago, but no luck.

I collect Norwegian RPGs (since I'm Norwegian), but I'm not really sure if I'd buy his game if it ever comes out. I've had a look at the downloadable material; it looks like a 90s reaction to D&D to me, the kind of game we all used to make to try to "fix" older games.

The game is out. In its third printing, I believe.

But yeah, his first couple albums have art heavily inspired by (or recreations of, however you want to say it) the Temple of Elemental Evil cover, and didn't one of his early publicity photos have a MERP map hanging on the wall behind him?

3rd printing? Christ I hate people. It's bad enough they buy FATE, but this, too?

The print runs are just in groups of 100, according to the game's site, so it's not that big a thing.

Oh thank fuck I'm outselling that Nazi.

Wow, it's actually out? That goes to show 1) how little I've been paying attention this past year and 2) how little attention the RPG scene is paying this guy.

How long til someone does a bootleg LP of his RPG reviews?

How is the quality of his RPG? Anyone have first hand experience with it?

I remember that Basic Fantasy RPG used to be your game of choice, James (until, of course, you wrote LotFP: WFRPG). I myself can't seem to get away from the 1974 D&D rules with stuff cherry-picked from Supplement I: GREYHAWK.

MERP was Varg's game of choice. He supposedly enjoyed the chaotic evil characters of Middle Earth best.
He is OSR. But he's so fucking hardcore when designing his own game that he's out in the woods w/ friends and family beating the crap out of weapons trying to develop better more accurate stats for his game. There's one video where he has his kid shooting arrows at a shield trying to determine its breaking point (I think?).
It nauseates me thinking about him stabbing Euronymous to death. I don't like a lot of his personal / social views, but Burzum fucking rocks and I really want to read MYFAROG.
I've posted stuff about this game several times since its first printing, I've been surprised each time how little reaction (maybe 1 favorable comment) I've gotten.
I think I'll email him about hosting some sessions on hangouts.

I aggree with +Zak Smith, Varg Vikernes is a dislikable guy... It doesn't really matter to me, if he likes RPGs, cats or puppy dogs; I really don't care about his stamp-collection, also.

Yeah, is there a shortage of people who aren't nazis to get reviews from?

Sorry. I mean, "nazis".

I wish Darkthrone would come out with an rpg already.

Ohhh....WFRPG = Weird Fantasy RPG'...I'm an idiot.
This whole time I'm thinking why the fuck is +Geoffrey McKinney, taking a swipe at LotFP suggesting it was Warhammer Fantasy RPG ripoff, that's stupid.

See, this is why I should stick to simply commenting, "I like turtles."

In one Varg trial documentary when police investigated his house they checked out his rpg collection and showed 2E Ravenloft book on the camera.

Burzum is his one-man band name, his artist name is Count Grishnackh. That's also character in LotR.

I've read through MYFAROG.
The Ettins in the game is pretty cool but that's probably the only thing I liked.
There is a table for skin color and the only race recommended for PCs roll 3d6 on the table that says "3-18: very light".
It says that the "otherwise excellent Lord of the Rings novels" are part of some judeochristian conspiracy to make Paganism look bad...

Some people asked me to review the game and try to exclude the author and his views from the review but that is impossible. He includes these small info boxes that present his views clearly to the reader throughout the book.

+Paolo Greco they are too complex for my tastes, a lot of combat stuff like bleeding and shock and such. I'm not at home now and can't check the book, but if you check out the character sheet from the site that can probably give you a clue :)

News Flash: In case anyone has forgotten; sometimes awful, miserable, people like the things you like.
Anyone know if he coded his white nationalism into the rules themselves? It would be a good thing to point to next time RPG.net starts going "blah, blah, blah, fear of the other."

Edit: oh, there you go.

+Noah Marshall Non-white people are used as orcs or goblins. They are described as violent, uneducated and filthy. Rule wise they have other stat modifiers, don't remember details.

This is also the game where redheads get better poison and electricity saves (but worse fire saves).

fuck
Given +Christian Sahlén comments about pc skin color, I retract any support for MYFAROG, pending my opportunity to finally read it for myself. (As for Varg's other comment cited, I know his views from his book about Scadanavian sorcery).
I had hoped Varg would have kept racist shit out of it. If it exists in Burzum's lyrics I wouldn't know, I don't know what the fuck he's saying.
I was looking forward to the game based on the videos I watched. I still want to read it, but, no, I don't want to pay for it. And no, forget the online game comment.
fuck...

Yeah, jeez. Can we get the world to a place where 300 people don't buy this game, and then start worrying about whether murdering imaginary orc babies is an appropriate way to spend our free time?

I bet it features race as class...

I'll get my coat.

+Victor Garrison Burzums lyrics do not have any racist content in them. Although I haven't read through every song lyric, the ones that I have are mostly talking about winter wonderlands and fluffy forest animals and secret lakes. As I understand he didn't become a full fledged nazi until after he was incarcerated.

I thought you were screwing w/ me. That really is what his stuff is about, plus a bunch fantasy imagery.

It is somewhat ironic isn't it.

Just had a brief email conversation with Varg, to see if the book is available as a pdf. Unfortunately it's not because piracy.

FYI he was very pleasant and helpful. Apparently he is also aware of LotFP, but didn't know +James Raggi was aware of him.

Is he still a neo-nazi? I rate not being one higher than being pleasant. Lots of terrible people are pleasant.

+Ramanan S he had not been associated with nor has he identified with Nazis for almost a decade. His views may not sit well the majority of the human race, but he does appear to value civilized conversation with people who don't share his outlook.

I will state that aside from his want to preserve Scandinavian culture and his core family values, I don't actually agree with his outlook. I will however say I am happy to talk to people who have these opinions.

If there is common ground there can be civil discussion. I honestly don't think he is the crazed extremist many would like to portray him as.
Ramanan S

+Dave Valderhaug people can change no doubt. I personally don't like talking to crazy racists, usually. So if he's moved on from that good for him.

+Barry Truman "I wish Darkthrone would come out with an rpg already."

I want a Cradle of Filth RPG based on their "Queen Victoria get possessed by Lilith" album, but we can't have everything we want.

+Ramanan S I doubt he's fully moved on, but like I said I'll talk to anyone who is open to actual rational discussion. After all my point of view isn't the only one around.

Oh I also agree with his view that religion is like sickness of the mind and should be treated as such.

I deal with people everyday who have worse criminal records, are religious bigots and totally racist. I can still hold a rational conversation with them.

Maybe I'm wrong to be this way, but hey it's who I am.

+Dave Valderhaug Nah, I am the same way in real life I find. I have a friend in my neighbourhood who is a hardcore anti-immigration dude. On the Internet though I find I have less patience.

+Dave Valderhaug hah! yeah I always assume people are saying the not jerk thing when I read what they write. Or I try to anyway.

+Zak Smith... what "meme" are you speaking of?  Perhaps I'm just dense, but I don't get it.

Hah.  Never mind.  Just read this thread and got the picture.  Well, I guess I can't choose who likes my game.

This post made my day. The connection with D&D and black metal has been blatant since the beginning. But to see a and hear this is mind-blowing.

Quoted further up:  "Non-white people are used as orcs or goblins. They are described as violent, uneducated and filthy."
Actually, that sounds quite Tolkien-esque.
