Captain Barnabas

You are an enterprising and fearsome pirate captain. Your crew follows you without question, though you generally leave managing them to first mate Smee. Unfortunately, due to your success, the navy has taken a serious interest in cutting your career short. You won the last battle by the skin of your teeth, and brought your damaged ship to the nearest out-of-the-way cove. Your secret fear is that besides the navy, you will have to face the fearsome pirate-killer Jayden. Coming into town, you are very surprised to find the townspeople welcoming you with open arms.

Your Goal is to keep your crew and ship safe, and make it out with what loot you can manage.

Your unique talent is Do As I Say!  You may shout a brief command, then show your card and make the target do that for a ten-count. However, you cannot do this on the same person more than once every 15 minutes or so.

First Mate Smee

All your life you wanted to be a pirate -- the most exciting, noble, and honorable profession there is. You rose through ranks, looking after and training your crew, until you became first mate under Captain Barnabas. You apprenticed likely-looking youth as pirates, such as the cabin boy Sam who was taken as a small boy, or the older youth Pete whose terrible luck means he stays well away from the cannons, gunpowder, or vital rigging. Others were recruited, such as Angel Meroe who transfered from the Dark Pirate Stevens a year ago. Baby-eater O'Brian volunteered and signed a five-year contract two years ago. Captain Barnabas is able, but he thinks little about his crew, and tend to bark out orders and assume that they'll be followed.

Your Goal is to replace Captain Barnabas as pirate leader, while safeguarding yourself and the rest of the crew. You will need either to get him captured while escaping, or transfer the crew's loyalty to yourself by discrediting the captain.

Your unique talent is Exacting. You can force people to obey their promises to you.

Angel Meroe - the pirate-born tough rogue

You were born a pirate and grew up with your mother, who was a pirate working for the Dark Pirate Stevens. The pirate life is all you've ever known, and it comes naturally to you. When you came of age a year ago, you transfered off and came to work for Captain Barnabas. You were thrilled to be on your own, and were determined to make your mother proud by being the best pirate you could be. Your heart was broken, though, when you learned that two months ago, the Dark Pirate Stevens and his crew were slain and their treasure captured by the pirate-hunting hero Jayden. You have hopes that there will be fighting soon, as Captain Barnabas' cover story of your being cattle ranchers won't last long.

Your Goal is to find your mother's killer, and extract a slow revenge of suffering rather than a quick death. You really want to stay with the crew and even get their help in your revenge, since a good pirate is loyal. However, if push comes to shove, family comes first.

Your unique talent is Born Scrapper. You can best any man in a fight.

Cabin Boy Sam Sparrow - young foundling raised by Smee

You grew up on Captain Barnabas' pirate ship, never knowing your real parents who evidently were lost in some battle. First Mate Smee raised you kindly, though, and you're on your way to becoming an able pirate. Smee clearly winced as Barnabas suggested that you all go into town pretending to be a troupe of actors.

Your Goal is to help your pirate family on their mission.

Your unique talent is Sneaky. As long as you're not in the middle of a conversation or conflict, you can start sneaking -- which you indicate by holding up your fists on either side of your head. While you're sneaking, everyone should role-play as if they don't see you. You can overhear conversations, but you cannot affect anyone until you stop sneaking.

Baby-Eating O'Brian - the most fearsome pirate who secretly loves cuddly animals

You grew up with a tall strong body, stern looks, and an even more fearsome glare. Your mother encouraged you to take a career as a pirate, as they could always use fearsome men. However, you have lately been thinking more and more of your childhood dream of caring for cute, fuzzy animals - which you are quite talented at. While you hate to break your contract, more than anything you want to find a job as a veterinarian. In any case, your cover story as a band of gypsies won't last long.

Your Goal is to get a job as a veterinarian.

Your unique talent is Fearsome Glare. You are so intimidating that no one dare attack or mess with you. You cannot be deliberately harmed or affected by anyone's talent. If someone tries an action on you, show your card and have them describe how they back off from attempting it.

Mayor Hurley - the pompous town mayor

You are the mayor of a small but formerly prosperous town. Your profession is as a master weaver, overseeing wool-making from your spacious home. Unfortunately, this town has fallen into hard times since the new Count Everett has taken over more than a dozen years ago. The people had high hopes when the old Count died that his only heir Francis would take over. However, Francis was away on the King's business and never returned. Instead, the old count's in-law Everett claimed the seat. Since then, the new Count has wreaked havoc with withering taxes, while those to oppose the taxes disappear and rumors of dark magic have spread. Happily, the Count's son Francis has finally returned.

Your Goal is to ensure the safety of the town, primarily by the overthrow of the new Count.

Your unique talent is Blather. By either talking to someone or being within one pace of them, you can force them to stay and talk with you for up to five minutes. This doesn't prevent them from doing other things at the same time (including attack you!), but they must stay and exchange words.

Terry the Rich Herder - wealthy sheep owner and wheeler-dealer

You are the richest person in town, owing to the extensive herds of sheep that you manage that tend to slip past the outrageous taxes of Count Everett. Twelve years ago, people had high hopes when the old Count died that his only heir Francis would take over.

Your Goal is to make sure that Count's taxes are repealed.

Your unique talent is Wheeler-Dealer. You can get anyone to agree to a trade of goods, especially one involving sheep. They may change their minds immediately after, however - after a count of twenty. Your offer should be somewhat reasonable, but it can be a large number of sheep. ( "I'll give you 20 sheep for that crown." ) Hand the person a note informing them of how many sheep they now own.

Morgan the Merchant - impulsive gossip who always knows what's going on

You are an active merchant in town, trading goods with the nearby towns and farms. Besides trade goods, though, you also deal in information and always have your sensitive ear to the ground. Happily, just an hour ago you spotted the young heir Francis, all grown up and walking towards town with a strange group of men - clearly in disguise.

Your Goal is to make sure that the new Count's rule is ended and his taxes repealed.

Your unique talent is Sharp Eared. If you observe a conversation, you can go up to the people who just spoke and show your card to make them summarize what they just said.

Sal the Shopkeep - a friendly and bustling shopkeep, always has the right thing

You are in charge of the town's one main shop, which you like to claim has everything that anyone wants. In fact, you are not far wrong. You have a peculiar intuition for always having the right thing that is needed in stock or even on hand. Secretly, you know that the rumors are true - because you yourself supplied Count Everett with ingredients for his dark magic, at a tidy profit. You have no particular loyalty to the Count, but if that secret were to get out, you would be ruined.

Your Goal is to see that Count's rule is ended and his taxes repealed, but without your being punished for your part in it.

Your unique talent is Always Prepared. You may have any generic item that could conceivably be on your person. You should have a set of index cards, and can write on those index cards the item that you have.

Doc Peyton - the learned and respectable town veterinarian with a dark secret

Actually, you are not Doc Peyton at all, but rather Count Everett - the ruler of this county and a secret practitioner of black magic. You took over from your brother-in-law the old Count twelve years ago, using a magical curse to keep away his true heir Francis. Since then, taxes on the county have funded your experiments much to your satisfaction. Unfortunately, you have recently heard he is returned, and the terms of your old curse mean that you cannot now kill the heir without losing magical power. The closest you have to an ally among the townspeople is Shopkeeper Sal, who has supplied you with material for dark magical rituals - a secret Sal is desperate to keep.

Your Goal is to retain control of your county, but if that is not possible, to escape with all the fortune you have gained.

Your unique talent is Magical Disguise. You may disguise yourself as any non-named character. You will have a supply of nametags. Take a nametag and write a new name on it, and you may introduce yourself to other players who won't recognize you.

Inspector Cameron - the King's inspector general

You are charged with examining problems with the king's business, and are passionate about law and order. You have been sent out to the town of Oakdale to investigate unconfirmed claims. that the local Count has imposed unfair taxes. Being of noble birth yourself, you feel that the commoners are usually at fault. However, if the Count really is breaking the King's law, you will see to it that punishment is swift and fair.

Your Goal is to see that justice is done for the Count and the townspeople.

Your unique talent is Detect Lies. At any point, you can show your card to another player and ask them if their last statement was a lie.

Assistant Avery - aide to Inspector Cameron with a secret

You are secretly Francis, the heir to the old Count. Twelve years ago, you were serving in the King's army when you inexplicably went mad. As punishment, you were banished from the kingdom. After many years in exile, you changed your name and found employment at another kingdom's court, and eventually managed to be hired by Inspector Cameron when visiting your home kingdom. Somehow, you must find help and take back your ancestral seat.

Your Goal is to be reinstated as the ruling Count.

Your talent is Heroism. Four times during the game, you can automatically win a conflict that you lost the coin toss for. Tear off one corner of this note as a marker with each use.

Captain Jayden - the famous pirate-fighting hero

You are reknowned as a pirate-fighting hero, credited with the defeat two month ago of the Dark Pirate Stevens and the recovery of his vast treasure horde for Florin. However, you are really a great coward who loves the fame of your position. Really, you were desperately fleeing the Dark Pirate Stevens when his ship ran into some rocks. An incoming storm forced the pirates to flee the wreck with only part of the treasure, and you collected the rest. You stretched the truth and implied that you had defeated and killed the pirates when you took the spoils back to Florin's capital. You are worried that your secret will be found out or your reputation smeared, though.

Your Goal is impress the Inspector with your vigilance in keeping him safe from pirates and bandits, without actually fighting any pirates or bandits.

Your unique talent is Run Away. You always escape any conflict. Show your card to the attackers and tell them that they can't catch up to you, then move away at a safe speed.
